A stock picker, also referred to as an order picker is a machinery which is somewhat similar to a forklift. It allows the operator to use forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain objects, and this feature is something the lift truck does not provide. Typically, order pickers are operated by electricity. These type of machinery are mostly used in a warehouse setting. Usually they are utilized for moving pallets and completing certain tasks in the stocking and shelving department.
The operator of an order picker utilizes controls to control the unit from a platform setting that usually sits fairly close to the ground. The operator could direct the machine to go backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the forks can be raised to the required level that makes it really convenient for the operator. For instance, if the materials needed, are located on a shelf that the operator cannot reach, then whole platform can be lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, several companies may have procedures and policies in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker could also put pallets on a shelf. Stackers and forklifts can be utilized to finish these specific jobs at some companies instead.
